Alan Dearling
In a pub I’ll often say, ‘I do joined-up handwriting.’ Loosely translated, I’m an author, publisher and photographer currently based in Eyemouth in the Scottish Borders. I’ve supported over a thousand writers to get published. And, I've written/co-authored over 40 publications – youthwork, housing, crime, social policy through to environmentalism, world music - even a dictionary! Post-university in Kent and London, I worked with schools, youth centres and social workers in England and Scotland. I also wrote for music mags, including Melody Maker and IT. From 1978, I was publications and training officer for the Scottish Office, and an active member of NUJ, writing books/articles about creative work with young people including the best selling New Youth Games Book with Howie Armstrong.
I’ve been a publisher for Longman, Pitman, Churchill Livingston, and Publishing Director for Russell House Publishing. My books have been published by Routledge, John Wiley, RHP, the CIH and Longman. Alongside membership of ALCS, I'm a member of DACS and PLS. I’m currently researching a guidebook to the Berwickshire-coast and a book about creative parenting with Sue Palmer, Deirdre Howard-Williams and Howie Armstrong, and managing publications for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and the Chartered Institute of Housing.
