Are there any exceptions to copyright?

The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act does provide for some exceptions to the exclusive rights.

“Fair dealing” for example is the term which applies to copying a work for the purposes of non-commercial research or private study, criticism or review and news reporting.

The Act also contains specific exceptions relating to the use of, among others, works for educational purposes and library services. Any uses of the work that are not covered by these exceptions will usually need the agreement of the copyright owner, either by individual consent or under the terms of a collective licence.
