ALCS Honorary President Maureen Duffy awarded DLitt by Loughborough University
Poet, playwright, author and co-founder of the Authors’ Licensing & Collecting Society, Maureen Duffy, is today being made a Doctor of Letters by Loughborough University.
Maureen began her career in teaching, but since her debut novel That’s how it was, in 1962, she has published around thirty works including five volumes of poetry.
Maureen, along with the rest of the Writers Action Group (WAG), campaigned in the 1960’s and 70’s on a number of issues affecting writers, leading ultimately to the establishment of the Public Lending Right (PLR) in the UK and consequently ALCS - then known as the Authors Lending Rights Society.
Maureen remains a staunch supporter and campaigner for writers’ rights. In addition to her role as Honorary President of ALCS, she is the President of Honour of the British Copyright Council, a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and is a former vice-president of the European Writers Congress.
Chief Executive of ALCS Owen Atkinson today wished Maureen warm congratulations and said:
"Maureen has been an inspiration to many. Her tireless campaigning for authors across the globe to ensure they receive the protection and recognition due to them, coupled with her marvelous ability to produce books, TV scripts and poetry to educate and entertain us, make her a worthy recipient of this honour awarded by Loughborough University."
