Bringing the world around us to life: 2011 EWA Shortlist Announced
Four non-fiction titles have been announced for the shortlist of the 2011 Educational Writers’ Award (EWA) which celebrates educational writing that encourages students to build up their understanding of a subject beyond the requirements of exam specifications.
Judges have said that all books shortlisted excel in bringing the natural world to life for young readers aged 5-11. The shortlisted books are as follows:
Nick Baker’s Bug Zoo, said to be ideal for budding zoologists: “full of information and practical activities for children to find out more for themselves…”
Gorilla Journal by Carolyn Franklin, “...has a great mix of informative text, sketches and photographs…”
Mission: Explore by The Geography Collective has been dubbed a brave book which “encourages children to explore the world around them, developing their curiosity, confidence and courage along the way…”
And Moon by Stewart Ross, is said to be highly readable and “a fascinating mix of science, history, literature, music, cinema, folklore and religion…”
Established in 2008 by the Authors’ Licensing & Collecting Society (ALCS) and the Society of Authors, the EWA is currently the only UK award to focus on educational non-fiction.
