Google Settlement revision date
Google, the US Authors Guild and US publishers have been given until 19 July 2011 to alter the orphan works and out of print titles agreement.
Tom Allen the President of the Association of American Publishers said talks were ongoing and: “…if not successful, the litigation will resume in order to protect the intellectual property rights of authors and publishers."
Google spokesperson Megan Lamb said Google intended to pursue their aim to “make the worlds books discoverable online” whatever the outcome. However, she confirmed that the search engine giant had “been working closely with the authors and publishers to explore a number of options in response to the court's decision.”
The orphan works and out of prints agreement was rejected by Judge Chin Denny in March this year, ruling that it "would give Google a significant advantage over competitors, rewarding it for engaging in wholesale copying of copyright works without permission, while releasing claims well beyond those presented in the case".
The ALCS will keep Members updated on any further developments in the Google Settlement.
