Imison and Tinniswood winners announced
The presentation of the Imison and Tinniswood Awards for Radio Drama took place last night at the British Academy in London.
Peter Souter won the ALCS sponsored Tinniswood prize for his radio drama Goldfish Girl. In only his second play for radio, Souter takes his audience on a journey through his main character, a man, trying to remind his wife (who is suffering from amnesia) of how they met. Louis Nowra was bestowed the ‘Highly Recommended’ honour for his play Far North set in Australia about a mother and son who set off on a journey from Sydney to Northern Australia.
The other contenders in the Tinniswood shortlist were Ali Smith for The Switch and Esther Wilson for The Heroic Pursuits of Darleen Fyles.
Lucy Caldwell took away the Imison Award for her first play Girl from Mars. The other shortlisted plays were David Hodgson for Cobwebs and Trevor Preston for Flaw in the Motor, Dust in the Blood.
The awards were presented to Mr Souter and Ms Caldwell by Mike Hodges, most recently known for his direction of Murder by Numbers, with a career that spans more than thirty years in writing and producing in film and television.
All the plays are due to be repeated over the course of the remaining year and the start of 2010. Peter Souter’s Goldfish Girl will be repeated in January next year on R7. Far North by Louis Nowra is to be repeated on R4, 23-26 November 2009, as will Lucy Caldwell’s Girl from Mars. All times to be confirmed.
