Rightsholders applaud EU for copyright agreement
The European Union has signed a trade agreement to protect intellectual property which has been welcomed by rightsholders.
The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) was signed yesterday. Susie Winter, Director General of the Alliance Against IP Theft said in response to the move:
“Intellectual property is one of the UK’s strongest exports, and IP underpins millions of jobs. From the fashion and design to the British film and video industries and the likes of the Premier League, we need the ability to protect our IP across borders. ACTA will enable EU-based intellectual property rights holders to do just this."
She went on to say that agreement provides a flexible set of international standards "which do not expand copyright law but encourage international co-operation and complement the current framework."
Ms Winter also strongly urged the UK Government to ratify the agreement as soon as possible.
