Statement on PLR

The Department for Culture Media and Sport has just published The Modernisation Review of Public Libraries: a Policy Statement - the result of a consultation undertaken at the end of last year. The full document can be found at http://www.culture.gov.uk/reference_library/consultations/6752.aspx.

We have noted with grave concern that the Policy Statement includes proposals for changes to the administration of PLR - something which was not raised during the consultation process.

While understanding the need to make economies, ALCS, the Society of Authors and the Writers’ Guild, along with many others, are pressing all the main political parties for unequivocal assurances about the secure future of PLR - run with the efficiency and expertise we have come to expect, and adequately funded, and that we will be fully consulted over any legislation seeking to change the status, nature or administration of PLR.
