A change to ALCS claims guidelines – newspaper supplements

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY, ALCS CAN NO LONGER ACCEPT CLAIMS FOR ANY ARTICLES WRITTEN FOR CERTAIN NEWSPAPER SUPPLEMENTS.

We have historically always paid members for newspaper supplements that have a separate ISSN from the main newspaper, but following a decision made at the November 2021 board meeting, we will no longer accept these claims.

ALCS collects fees for magazines licensed by CLA and NLA media access through Publishers’ Licensing Services. Thanks to improvements in the data provided to ALCS by these agencies we are now able to more clearly identify the specific titles that are covered by the licences. As a result we don’t believe that we have a mandate to collect on behalf of magazine supplements published by newspaper publishers, so they will now be excluded from our collections as are all newspaper titles.

Here you can see the newspaper supplements no longer valid for payment that are being excluded from future payments. We are in the process of making updates to our site, so that these publications will no longer appear in the search function when you enter a work.

Already made a claim?

We will be honouring claims made for articles written during the current payment period between 1 January 2018 – 31 December 2020. We will not however, remunerate claims made for articles published in these publications from 1 January 2021 onwards.

We apologise for any inconvenience, and potential financial impact, this may cause members. We endeavour to collect as much money as possible that’s entitled to writers across the UK, while adhering to the regulations that govern collecting societies.
