Payment types
There are different types of payments you may receive from us, depending on the works you have produced and how it is used. These are:
Usage payments
These are payments that are based on how your work is actually used, and vary each year according to the data we receive. Some examples of usage-based payments include:
Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) licensing: When your works are photocopied or digitally copied by CLA license-holders.
Overseas Public Lending Right (PLR): When your book is loaned from a library in a country where we collect PLR payments for UK writers.
Cable retransmission: When an audiovisual work is broadcast simultaneously in another country through a cable network.
Claims-based payments
Payments for articles and visual contributions are based on claims, meaning you need to let us know what works you have produced and where they have appeared.
Unlike other payment types, we don’t automatically assign these works to your account and you will only receive payment for eligible works you have submitted a claim for.
MemberShare payments
MemberShare payments are payments intended to provide financial support to writers.
These payments are calculated by sector (books, scripts and articles) and location (UK, EU and international). These payments are paid equally to all writers in a sector/location. Unlike other payment types, they are not based on usage
MemberShare payments aren’t guaranteed. However, if a sector is allocated MemberShare payments, all members with an eligible work of that type will receive a payment. If you have eligible works in more than one sector, you will receive multiple MemberShare payments.
These payments will appear on your statement as ‘MemberShare payment’ followed by the sector and location. These payments aren’t new, however we have changed the way they are described and categorised, so that they are more easily understood by our members.
