Last month, we paid 112,113 members their share of £36,080,542. We've put together some headline statistics that you might find interesting.

What are the most common amounts that members receive? Most members (81.1%) received payments between £100 and £1,000. For other members:

  • 14.9% of members received payments between £10 and £100.
  • 3.7% of members received payments between £1,000 and £10,000
  • 0.2% of members received payments over £10,000

Have you ever wondered where the money comes from? The majority of our income comes from licences sold by the Copyright Licensing Agency. The biggest single source is from CLA Higher Education licences. Serials Licences and Further Education Licences are also included in the top five sources, along with Dutch cable transmission and Italian TV on demand. You can learn more about where the money comes from here.

We paid members £589,577 from international private copying schemes in the most recent distribution. These are “levies”, mandated by governments, that are charged on the sale of recording and copying equipment, as a way of compensating creators for the reuse of their works.

Currently, there is no private copying scheme in the UK (although this is one of our core campaign focuses). However, these schemes exist in most European countries. A recent report by CISAC found that private copying schemes are an effective solution to fairly compensating creatives for the copying of their work. We claim money from these international schemes on behalf of UK writers.

Which countries received the most money? After the UK (£28,617,561), the highest paid countries were USA (£3,701,951), Australia (£689,414), Canada (£344,144) and France (£335,302).

As well as paying writers for uses of their work, we also pay the beneficiaries of writers’ estates. Last month, we paid £3,123,371 to 10,764 successor members. You can learn more about successor membership here.
