How it works

Payments to members

Find out when you’ll be paid, and why payments can change from year to year.
Payments to members

Tell us about your new works

If you write articles, books or scripts, here’s what you need to tell us, and when.

Articles

Claim for articles you’ve written for UK magazines and journals in the last three years.

Books

Tell us about all the books you’ve written, and any contributions you’ve made, such as chapters, essays or poems.

Scripts

Keep us up to date with your TV and radio scripts.

Visual contributions to books, magazines and journals

ALCS is now paying members for the visual contributions they have made to books, magazines and journals as well as the written contributions they’ve made. Find out if you can claim.

Websites and blogs

We are no longer collecting information about the websites and blogs that our members write for.

Where the money comes from

We collect money from all over the world – find out where, exactly.

VAT

Are you VAT-registered? If so, you can benefit from our self-billing scheme.

Commission

We charge a commission on the money we pay you. We keep this as low as possible, and use it to run ALCS (it's currently 10%). Find out more about our commission and any tax implications it might have for you.

Tax and deductions

Are you unsure what to put on your tax return? Or living overseas and exempt from UK tax? Find out how your payments are taxed.

ALCS Annual General Meeting

We hold our AGM every November. Find out about the next one.

How ALCS is run

Read about the rules and regulations that guide how we run things.

What are ‘secondary uses’ or ‘secondary rights’?

The money we pay our members is from ‘secondary uses’, where someone uses a work that’s already been distributed – such as when schools photocopy books they own, or libraries lend books. Find out how we collect payments for these.

Terms and Conditions of Membership

When you join ALCS we'll ask you to sign a declaration agreeing with our Terms and Conditions of Membership.
